Emily E. Mawer

Emily Mawer focuses her practice on higher education and employment law. Emily advises colleges and universities on a variety of legal issues including Title IX, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, Clery, FERPA, the Fair Housing Act, study abroad, minors on campus, and the ADA. Emily also conducts sexual misconduct investigations. Through trainED, Emily provides training and conducts compliance reviews and audits for companies and higher education institutions. 

In addition, Emily advises employers on a wide range of employment issues, helping them to develop practices that minimize their legal risk. Emily draws on her experience in employment and general commercial litigation, having worked with clients in industries including health care, construction, and financial services. She has also represented clients in appeals in state and federal court.

Before entering private practice, Emily served as a clerk for the Honorable Chief Justice Lorie S. Gildea on the Minnesota Supreme Court.

  • Conducted compliance review of a public institution’s policies and procedures relating to the abuse or neglect of minors
  • Conducted compliance review of hazing prevention and response for higher education institution
  • Conducted multiple investigations of allegations of sexual misconduct involving students and/or staff at higher education institutions
  • Drafted sexual misconduct policies for multiple higher education institutions
  • Advised higher education institutions on decisions and appeals following sexual misconduct or other policy violation investigations involving students, faculty, and/or staff
  • Conducted employment investigations into allegations of workplace misconduct by current and former employees
  • Conducted independent review of large international faith-based organization’s sexual harassment and child safety response and prevention efforts
