A steady drumbeat from the media warns that giving by major donors is down in the face of the uncertain economy. At the same time, charities need gifts more than ever. Faced with this dilemma, institutions must look at all potential sources of revenue. This Briefing will explore ways to convert planned gifts to current dollars. A donor and the charitable beneficiary can terminate all or part of a CRT early to yield a current distribution to the charity. To relieve themselves of the administrative burden, donors with private foundations can convert them to donor advised funds or possibly endowment funds at public charities. Understanding these options gives charities and their development officers more tools that can raise current revenue.
