Three Lathrop Gage Attorneys Recognized as Leading Practitioners of Private Wealth Law by Chambers USA in High Net Worth Guide

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (October 20, 2017) – Chambers 2017 High Net Worth Guide has recognized three Lathrop Gage attorneys for leadership in their respective practice areas. The firm was also honored for its strong Wealth Strategies practices in Kansas and Missouri.

The Lathrop Gage attorneys and practice areas were recognized based on Chambers’ research of the firm’s strengths, significant work, and current clients. Chambers’ staff collectively conducted thousands of interviews with lawyers and clients to complete this year’s research. Chambers USA is the producer of an annual client guide to America’s leading lawyers and its High Net Worth Guide specifically focuses on private wealth management work in key jurisdictions around the world.

This is a notable recognition and distinguishes them from others in the Wealth Strategies Practice field. The attorneys recognized in the 2017 High Net Worth Guide are:

James Betterman (Overland Park, Ks.), is a member of the firm’s wealth strategies team. His practice focuses on transfer tax and charitable planning, succession planning for family owned businesses, family office representation, and trusts and estates litigation. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), a nonprofit association that recognizes lawyers based on their outstanding reputation, exceptional skill, and substantial contribution to the field.  Betterman was selected as a Lawyer of the Year by The Best Lawyers in America®, 2017. He is a member of the Estate Planning Society of Kansas City, and frequently presents seminars on Estate Planning.

Peter Brown (Overland Park, Ks.), focuses on charitable, business, estate and tax planning for closely held corporations, individuals with large estates, and real estate investors. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) and was named Kansas City, Mo. Trusts and Estates Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in 2012. For over a decade he has been selected among Best Lawyers in America®, and served as Past-President of the Estate Planning Society of Kansas City. Brown has lectured on tax subjects and has taught partnership tax at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Scott Malin (St. Louis, Mo.), is the Chair of firm’s Business Division and serves on the firm’s Executive Committee. He is a member of the wealth strategies practice area. His practice focuses on succession planning, estate planning and administration, taxation, charitable planning, and general business law for individuals, privately held businesses, and families. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), and was named a 2018 Lawyer of the Year, by The Best Lawyers in America®. He is a frequent lecturer and speaker on succession planning, estate planning and tax issues for various organizations, and is an Adjunct Professor at the Washington University School of Law in the Masters of Taxation Program.
