KANSAS CITY (December 12, 2022) – Lathrop GPM LLP recently acted as legal advisor to the Western Missouri Soccer League (WMSL) in the sale of its soccer complex and league operations to AVB Properties, LLC, an entity owned by the managing partner of the Kansas City Comets.
The WMSL is a youth soccer league, which has been the backbone of soccer in the Northland area since its inception in 1979. Originally formed by four parents who felt that there were no formal means or facilities for their children to be trained and to compete in the sport of soccer, WMSL has provided the facilities and a league structure for youth soccer from ages 3 through 19 for over four decades.
“This was a real estate deal with some asset purchase issues involved,” said Luke Meriwether, partner at Lathrop GPM. “We were able to come up with a deal structure that worked for both sides to ensure that the legacy built by WMSL will continue and the complex will continue to be focused on providing a facility for the development of youth soccer in the greater Kansas City area for many years to come.”
The full Lathrop GPM team advising WSML includes Meriwether, Patricia Garringer-Strickland, and Paul Lewis. This was a cross-practice deal, involving attorneys from the Lathrop GPM Business Transactions, Real Estate & Tax Credit and Intellectual Property Litigation groups.
