Clients describe Alana McMullin as a fearless, creative advocate who brings clarity, strategy, and determination to complex disputes. They value her ability to navigate high stakes insurance recovery matters while championing clients in significant civil rights litigation. Alana says, “I take a personal interest in every case. My goal is to fight for the best possible outcome while ensuring clients feel informed, supported, and empowered throughout the process.”

Alana became an attorney because she was drawn to problem-solving, persuasive advocacy, and the opportunity to help people make informed strategic decisions. That commitment drives her dual focus on insurance recovery and civil rights work. As a key leader of Lathrop GPM’s Civil Rights Insurance Recovery team, she litigates § 1983 civil rights claims for wrongfully convicted individuals and has helped secure millions in settlements for exonerees.

Her practice includes representing Fortune 500 companies, manufacturers, nonprofits, regional cooperatives, real estate firms, retailers, franchisors and franchisees, and individuals in complex insurance recovery matters. Alana litigates insurance disputes involving property damage, natural disasters, environmental contamination and toxic torts, product liability, organizational misconduct liability, constitutional claims, and general liability exposures. She also counsels policyholders on risk assessment, policy interpretation, and navigating the claims process, and she negotiates directly with carriers when coverage is disputed.

Clients rely on Alana for her creativity and tenacity in pursuing all potential avenues of coverage. She tailors her approach to each client’s needs, resolving matters efficiently when possible and trying cases when insurers refuse to pay covered claims. Her litigation experience is extensive, and includes initial case evaluations, drafting pleadings, arguing motions, conducting discovery, preparing witnesses, and advocating for clients through trial and appeal.

Alana’s commitment to civil rights runs deep. Her advocacy for the wrongfully convicted began in law school through the Innocence Project Clinic, where she investigated innocence claims and developed early experience in high stakes litigation. Today she continues that work through pro bono partnerships with innocence organizations nationwide and by working with civil rights attorneys across the country to prosecute § 1983 claims and obtain critical insurance proceeds to fund settlements.

Before joining the firm, Alana served as a Lathrop GPM summer associate, supporting attorneys across a wide range of litigation matters. In law school she honed her courtroom skills by earning the Top Oral Advocate Award two consecutive years, competing on national moot court and mock trial teams, and receiving the Order of the Barristers, awarded to the top ten oral advocates in her graduating class. She also expanded her global perspective through a London Study Abroad program focused on comparative law, cultural advocacy, and international business organizations.

The jury returned a $27.4 million verdict, which she defended in the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals in a precedent setting decision for policyholders nationwide.
