Bert Bates Receives the Outstanding Kansas Citian Award from Kansas City Rotary

KANSAS CITY, MO. – In recognition of his longstanding record of philanthropic and legal service, Lathrop Gage attorney W.H. (Bert) Bates  will receive the Outstanding Kansas Citian Award June 4 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri. Myron Sildon, president of the club, will present the award at the weekly Rotary meeting at the Muehlebach Hotel.

“Bert Bates has been an outstanding citizen, involved throughout his career in making our community and state a better to place to live," said Mr. Sildon. "This unwavering dedication to the well-being of our citizens and his profession deserves to be honored with this first-ever award from our Rotary club."

Bates has served as President and on numerous committees of the Missouri Bar. He has been active in several sections of the American Bar Association, and is a former Chair of the Greater Kansas City as well as the Missouri State Chambers of Commerce, and is past president of the University of Missouri Board of Curators. He also has served on the boards or in other capacities for The Hawthorne Foundation, Center for Public Resources, American Red Cross (Kansas City), University of Kansas City, Civic Council of Kansas City, National Conference of Christians and Jews, and Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association Foundation. He also is a former member of the Missouri Parks Association.

Inducted into the Missouri Academy of Squires, Bates has worked as special Assistant Attorney General of Missouri and as counsel to the Kansas City Board of Police Commissioners. He has been awarded a number of other honors including the Oxford Cup from Beta Theta Pi, the NCCJ Brotherhood Award, the Geyer Award from the University of Missouri, and Whitaker Award for Outstanding Services from the Lawyers Association of Kansas City.

Mr. Bates, who served overseas in the infantry division during World War II, is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, where he was Senior Editor of the Michigan Law Review, and the University of Missouri, Columbia.

The 375-member Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri, the 13th oldest Rotary chapter in the world, celebrates its centennial next year. The service-oriented club supports a local Youth Camp free to economically and physically disadvantaged children as well as a variety of other philanthropic projects here and abroad.
