6/8/2011

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (June 8, 2011) — The law firm of Gray Plant Mooty is pleased to announce that Susan Gaertner has been selected to serve as an advisor to a pair of American Bar Association (ABA) Criminal Justice Section committees.

At its Spring Meeting, the ABA Criminal Justice Section appointed Gaertner as a special advisor to the Council on Prevention and Victims Rights. The Criminal Justice Section has over 20,000 members, including prosecutors, private defense counsel, appellate and trial judges, law professors, correctional and law enforcement personnel, law students, public defenders, and other criminal justice professionals. With its diverse, multi-disciplinary membership, the Criminal Justice Section has primary responsibility for the ABA's work on solutions to issues involving crime, criminal law, and the administration of criminal and juvenile justice.

The ABA Criminal Justice Section also appointed Gaertner to serve as an advisor to the ABA’s participation in the study committee on the Eyewitness Identification Procedures Act—an initiative set forth by The National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (ULC). The ULC study committee review the assigned area of law and recommend whether the ULC should proceed with a draft on that subject.

Gaertner, is an experienced trial attorney, having served as Ramsey County attorney from 1995 to 2011. She was only the fourth person to hold the office since 1933 and the first woman to hold the office. Gaertner took a hands-on approach and successfully prosecuted many high-profile and complex criminal cases. She also served as assistant county attorney for 10 years and as a law clerk for the Honorable Gerald W. Heaney of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.

Gaertner received her J.D., cum laude, from the University of Minnesota Law School.
