Gray Plant Mooty Celebrates 150th Anniversary With A Year Of Service; Minneapolis Mayor Declares "Gray Plant Mooty Day"

1/5/2016

MINNEAPOLIS – Gray Plant Mooty, the state's oldest law firm founded in Minneapolis, is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2016 with a yearlong focus on service befitting an institution that has been woven into the fabric of the community since 1866.

“As long as Minneapolis has been a city, we have provided its residents and businesses with top-flight legal advice,” said Charlie Maier, co-Managing Partner of Gray Plant Mooty. “Our 150th anniversary is an opportunity to look back at all we have done and, more importantly, to imagine what we can become through continued collaboration with our clients, employees, and with the communities in which we work and live.”

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges proclaimed Tuesday as “Gray Plant Mooty Day” to recognize the firm’s longevity, excellence and commitment to the community.

From One-Man Practice To National Player

In the summer of 1866, Charles H. Woods – a New Hampshire lawyer – came to the new town of Minneapolis and established a one-man legal practice. He noted that the 10-year-old settlement was poised to become a critical business capital of the region.

Woods proved prophetic and, over the next 150 years, Gray Plant Mooty grew with the city’s burgeoning business community and into national prominence. The full service law firm now has more than 180 attorneys across offices in Minneapolis, St. Cloud, Minn., Fargo, N.D., and Washington, D.C.

Gray Plant Mooty’s longevity is rooted in its unparalleled focus on client relationships and client service. Moreover, the firm draws vitality from a culture that embraces diversity and believes in the strengths that a wide variety of legal professionals contribute. Gray Plant Mooty recognizes a philosophy of championing diversity will help to sustain continued growth and momentum in this, the firm’s third century.

A Year Of Service

Gray Plant Mooty is embarking on a year of service that pays homage to the firm’s history while reaffirming the importance philanthropy will continue playing in the next 150 years.

Consistent with the firm’s commitment to collaboration, Gray Plant Mooty encouraged employees to recommend charities to support and is planning a number of notable community projects that pay homage to its heritage in Minneapolis and other home markets.

“Community service has always been a core value of Gray Plant Mooty, so we felt responsible to make it the centerpiece of our milestone anniversary,” said Sarah Duniway, co-Managing Partner of Gray Plant Mooty. “The firm’s current generation views itself as stewards of this tradition and hope this year’s efforts will only inspire future efforts.”

To further mark the occasion, Gray Plant Mooty partnered with Faribault Woolen Mill – another Minnesota institution that recently celebrated its 150th anniversary – on a special commemorative scarf that will be given to friends of the firm.
