Two Lathrop GPM Los Angeles Partners Named Southern California Super Lawyers
Los Angeles (Jan. 23, 2020) – Southern California Super Lawyers recently announced its 2020 list naming two of Lathrop GPM’s Los Angeles attorneys: Los Angeles Partner-in-Charge Nancy Sher Cohen and Partner Erica Van Loon. Lathrop GPM law firm is the result of the recent combination of Gray Plant Mooty and Lathrop Gage LLP.
Nancy Sher Cohen leads the Lathrop GPM Insurance Recovery and Counseling team in addition to her oversight of the firm’s Los Angeles office. Cohen’s clients have included Fortune 500 and similar companies, such as Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., Aerojet, Alpha Therapeutic and more. She practices in the areas of Environmental Law and Product Liability and Tort Litigation, serving as lead counsel in the prosecution of many insurance coverage lawsuits related to life insurance claims and environmental and product liabilities. She has been lead counsel in the prosecution of many insurance coverage lawsuits related to life insurance claims and environmental and product liabilities, resulting in recoveries in excess of $1.5 billion in some of the most prominent and complex insurance coverage matters. Cohen also represented a range of homeowners and real estate developers affected by the Thomas Fire, the largest fire in California's modern history, as well as those affected by the proceeding mudslides in the Montecito area that killed 17 people and destroyed dozens of homes. In October, Benchmark Litigation named Cohen to its 2019 Top 250 Women in Litigation for the eighth consecutive year.
Erica Van Loon leads the firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation team and focuses her practice on high-stakes copyright, trademark, trade secret and patent litigation matters at trial and on appeal. In two recent copyright litigation matters, Van Loon won a bench trial for client Reuben Klamer, in which the court named Klamer as the author of the iconic board game, The Game of Life and dismissed plaintiffs’ claim for copyright termination, finding her late-husband’s work on the prototype as a work-for-hire for Klamer. She also won a motion to dismiss, dismissing all defendants in a copyright infringement matter on the novel ground of forum non conveniens, due to the fact that the plaintiff had entered into a prior agreement with the defendants' affiliate containing a forum selection clause. In October, The Los Angeles Business Journal named Van Loon its 2019 Intellectual Property Attorney of the Year.
