Public Dedication Set for $9M Soccer Stadium Orchestrated by Lathrop Gage Attorney Ray Beagle

In his capacity as co-trustee of the Stanley H. Durwood Foundation, Lathrop Gage attorney Ray Beagle successfully concluded the establishment of a soccer stadium at the University of Missouri - Kansas City campus this year, a multi-use facility that has been praised by the UMKC chancellor as a "transforming" event for the university. The stadium will be dedicated at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, October 3, before a men's Division I soccer game versus Western Illinois University. As one of the main forces behind the negotiation and creation of the stadium, Mr. Beagle will be recognized during the public ceremony where the ribbon will be cut on the facility, launching the beginning of the era for NCAA Division I soccer games to be played on campus.

The Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field, which cost just over $9 million to complete, was made possible by a $5 million gift from the Durwood Foundation. Mr. Beagle served as Stanley Durwood's attorney for several decades as he built a major entertainment company, and has served as co-trustee with Kansas City's Charles Eagan since its inception.

Before his passing in 1999, Mr. Durwood was awarded the Chancellor’s Medal in 1994, because of his efforts and continued advocacy for the university. The Durwood Foundation and its trustees have continued to support numerous efforts on the UMKC campus. Besides working to get student-athletes scholarships, the Durwood Foundation established a creative writing fellowship in the English Department designed to keep them competitive in the search for talented graduate students. Since 2005, the Foundation has pledged well above $1 million in grants to several UMKC initiatives spread among several areas including The Conservatory of Music and Dance and the School of Dentistry.

According to the university, the Durwood Foundation’s leadership gift represents the largest single commitment to UMKC Athletics. The stadium will provide the university with one of the top soccer facilities in the Midwest.

Mr. Beagle served for 17 years as General Counsel of a major entertainment company and its affiliates, one of the largest theatre exhibition companies in the United States. In this capacity he was responsible for all of the legal activities of the company, and its affiliates, including the development of an evolving corporate structure, acquisitions, mergers, real estate, financing, litigation and employment law. In addition, he was responsible for development of the corporate structure and legal affairs of the company's expansion into Canada, Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim. His representation of the company commenced when the company operated a single theatre in the Kansas City area.
