SAFEHOME, Inc. Selects Tammy Somogye as 2010 Outstanding Human Resource Advisor

3/29/2010

The Kansas-based domestic violence agency SAFEHOME, Inc., honored Lathrop Gage attorney Tammy Somogye (Labor & Employment - Overland Park) with its 2010 “Outstanding Human Resource Advisor” award. The selection was based on her ten years of volunteer service to the organization, whose mission is to provide shelter and support for victims of domestic violence and their children.

After being announced at SAFEHOME’s Annual Meeting on January 22, 2010, the award was then presented in person at the firm's Overland Park, Kan., office last week. Ms. Somogye was at the same time presented with a framed butterfly drawing made by one of the children at the SAFEHOME shelter.

"As SAFEHOME’s Associate Director, I have the pleasure of overseeing human resources for our staff of 67 people," said Janee’ Hanzlick. "However, my background is in social work and I often need the help and advice of an H.R. legal expert – and this is where Tammy comes in. Tammy is my personal 'life line' and an incredible resource for SAFEHOME."

In her legal practice, Ms. Somogye represents educational institutions, municipalities, businesses, and individuals in the areas of employment and education law. In addition to prosecuting and defending litigation on behalf of her clients, Ms. Somogye reviews contracts and develops educational and employment policies for Kansas school districts and community colleges and advises them on day-to-day legal issues, such as student discipline, teacher tenure, overtime compensation, open records, open meetings, student records, and more. She also develops employment policies for Kansas municipalities and various businesses and advises them regarding various employment issues that arise, such as background checks, employee discipline and terminations, unemployment compensation appeals, and worker’s compensation claims.

"While Tammy’s work is 'behind the scenes,' her impact is enormous," Ms. Hanzlick explained. "She wrote the agency’s Family and Medical Leave Act policy and makes sure we keep it up to date and apply it correctly. She provides guidance and information on employment issues. She reviews the agency’s personnel policies, and offers suggestions to make sure that we stay on top of new regulations. It is a pleasure to work with Tammy and I am very pleased to recognize her this year as SAFEHOME’s 'Outstanding Human Resources Advisor.'"
