Volunteer Lawyers Network Honors Gray Plant Mooty’s William Fisher as “Volunteer of the Year”

9/17/2010

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (September 17, 2010) — The Minneapolis-based law firm of Gray Plant Mooty is pleased to announce that shareholder William Fisher is the 2010 Volunteer Lawyers Network “Volunteer of the Year.” Former Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Eric Magnuson presented Fisher with the honor earlier this month at Volunteer Lawyers Network’s second annual Benefactors’ Pro Bono Picnic.

Volunteer Lawyers Network (VLN) is a nonprofit organization that, without charge, helps economically disadvantaged Minnesotans with legal problems through volunteer attorneys. Fisher began volunteering with VLN in 2000 and, in the past ten years, has worked on over 980 volunteer consumer cases—ranging from brief services and advice at legal clinics to full representation in bankruptcy adversarial proceedings.

Fisher has also recruited several new volunteer attorneys for VLN and was instrumental in the formation of a new Bankruptcy Advice Clinic, a joint venture of VLN, the Bankruptcy Court, and the Minnesota State Bar Association Bankruptcy Section.

At Gray Plant Mooty, Fisher practices in the areas of reorganization and bankruptcy, commercial law, and creditors' rights. He has represented lenders of all types, including equipment lessors and financiers, real estate mortgage lessors, creditors’ committees, Chapter 11 trustees, Chapter 11 debtors, and Chapter 7 debtors.

Fisher teaches courses on business law at Metropolitan State University, and he is a frequent lecturer and author at legal education seminars on bankruptcy, the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), finance, and consumer law. He has also taught the UCC at William Mitchell College of Law and banking law at Hamline University.

Fisher received his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1985.
