James Betterman (Overland Park, Kan.), is a member of the firm’s Wealth Strategies team. His practice focuses on the preparation of estate planning instruments, sophisticated estate planning for high net worth individuals, succession planning for owners of closely-held businesses, life insurance planning, charitable planning, estate planning with retirement assets, preparation of estate tax returns and gift tax returns, administration of trusts and estates, trusts and estates litigation and resolution of tax controversies with the Internal Revenue Service. Betterman has been named to Missouri/Kansas Super Lawyers since 2006, The Best Lawyers in America annually since 2005 and selected as a Best Lawyer’s Lawyer of the Year in 2017. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a member of the Estate Planning Society of Kansas City.

Peter Brown (Overland Park, Kan.), is a member of the firm’s Wealth Strategies team and also serves the Charitable and Other Exempt Organizations industry. Brown focuses on charitable, business, estate and tax planning for closely held corporations, individuals with large estates and real estate investors. He has been named to Missouri/Kansas Super Lawyers since 2006 and Best Lawyers in America since 2001, and named “Kansas City, Mo. Trusts and Estates Lawyer of the Year” by Best Lawyers in 2012. Brown is an ACTEC Fellow, a member and past President of the Estate Planning Society of Kansas City and a member and past Chair of the Estate Planning Symposium Committee. He also worked for the Internal Revenue Service for six years where he was a manager of its Estate & Gift Tax group and has taught partnership tax at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Scott Malin (St. Louis, Mo.), is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee and serves as the firm’s Deputy Managing Partner. A member of the Wealth Strategies practice area, his practice focuses on succession planning, estate planning and administration, taxation, charitable planning, and general business law for individuals, privately held businesses and families. Malin has been named to Missouri/Kansas Super Lawyers since 2005, The Best Lawyers in America annually since 2010 and selected as a Best Lawyer’s Lawyer of the Year in 2018. Malin is an ACTEC Fellow and a member of its Business Planning Committee, a member of The Missouri Bar’s Probate and Trust Committee, a Board Member of the Productive Living Board and a Disciplinary Hearing Officer for the Supreme Court of Missouri. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Washington University School of Law in the Master’s of Taxation Program.
