Lathrop Gage Names Erica Van Loon to Helm New Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group

Lathrop Gage LLP announces the formation of its 11th practice group*, Intellectual Property Litigation, effective immediately. The firm selected Los Angeles Partner Erica Van Loon to lead the new group. Historically a subsumed section of the firm’s Intellectual Property group, a rise in the onboarding of intellectual property litigation attorneys and plans to attract more going forward warranted the group’s creation.

“Intellectual property is a crucial and valuable asset for our clients in today’s dense economic marketplace. Whatever the need, we are ready to help our clients ensure their innovations receive protection and remain protected,” said Cameron Garrison, Lathrop Gage Managing Partner and intellectual property litigator. “We are also excited to have Erica spearhead this group. She will be a great addition to the firm’s leadership team and brings the right combination of area expertise and administrative acumen for the job.”

Van Loon joined Lathrop Gage in September 2018 as the firm expanded its Los Angeles office and its Intellectual Property team. An experienced trial attorney, Van Loon’s 15-year practice focuses in the areas of complex copyright, trademark, trade secrets and patent litigation.

“I am honored to lead this team of truly gifted intellectual property litigators and capitalize upon the group’s broad range of expertise and depth of talent.” said Van Loon. “As our attorneys work hard to ensure our clients’ satisfaction, I want to ensure they receive the support they need to succeed in the most effective and efficient manner possible.”

The group will continue to work closely with the firm’s Intellectual Property team led by Boston Partner Sean Coughlin.

Lathrop Gage’s Intellectual Property Litigation team significantly increased with 10 attorneys joining in the past 12 months across four offices. The group’s recent noteworthy successes include Los Angeles Partner Andrew Choung’s June 2018 win of a $400 million verdict in jury trial representing a university-based licensing entity in a patent-assertion action over FinFET technology (KAIST IP US LLC v. Samsung Electronics Co., LTD., et al); and Los Angeles Partner Erica Van Loon's bench trial win on the issue of copyright ownership for defendant Reuben Klamer, the author of the iconic board game, The Game of Life.
