In Memoriam: Richard Braman
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Richard Braman, a friend and colleague who has been with Gray Plant Mooty since 1987. Richard, a principal at the firm and member of the antitrust practice group, died peacefully on June 9, 2014, after a long battle with cancer. His wife, Margo, was by his side when he passed.
Richard’s colleagues remember him as a deeply principled attorney who put his values into practice. In 1997, Richard founded The Sedona Conference, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of law and policy in the areas of antitrust law, complex litigation, and intellectual property rights. The group’s work on policy and best practice in e-discovery has been widely influential, earning Richard mention in The American Lawyer as an “E-Discovery Trailblazer” and one of 2013’s 50 greatest Big Law innovators of the last 50 years. Before joining Gray Plant Mooty, Richard owned Gabriel’s, a nationally renowned jazz club in Minneapolis, and he was involved in the local jazz community throughout his life.
In addition to his wife Margo Braman, Richard is survived by his sister Sandra Braman and brother-in-law Guy Milford, brother Stuart Braman and sister-in-law Nancy Braman, nephew Jon and Lisette Braman with daughter Naomi, and nephew Dan Braman. He is also survived by mother-in-law Madreen Steeves and brother-in-law William Jones Jr. and sister-in-law Jennifer Switzer. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to homeless shelters in Minneapolis, MN or Crossroads for Life in Douglasville, GA. A memorial service for Richard will be held Saturday, June 14, at 2 PM at Greer’s Mortuary in Sedona, Ariz.
