Alexander T. Brown

Alexander Brown has litigated dozens of insurance coverage cases across the country on behalf of some of the largest corporations in the world, in federal and state trial and appellate courts, where hundreds of millions of dollars have been in dispute. Prior to joining the firm, Alex was a member of an international law firm and managed cases for its Global Insurance Sector and Insurance Litigation Practice based in Chicago.

Alex represents several Fortune 500 companies in high-stake lawsuits. Alex has extensive expertise in litigating “third-party” coverage for complicated “long-tail” liability claims from cases involving massive environmental contamination and oil leaks, to institutional sexual abuse and molestation cases, to ongoing false advertising and IP infringement disputes, to class-action lawsuits alleging asbestos, silica, chemical, and even nuclear material exposure. Recently, Alex helped recover over $150 million for a Fortune 500 company that sustained remediation expenses in connection with a landfill subsurface smoldering event.

In addition, Alex has litigated several high-profile "first party" coverage lawsuits involving complex business interruption claims for cyber liability attacks, hurricanes, fires, floods, and even COVID-related shutdowns.

By far, Alex is proudest of being one of the founders and leaders of Lathrop GPM’s Civil Rights Insurance Recovery practice which litigates §1983 civil rights claims on behalf of exonerees who were wrongfully imprisoned. In 2016, working with a team of our attorneys and a civil rights-focused law firm, Alex helped secure a $20.5 million settlement for three wrongfully convicted men in Hattiesburg, Mississippi after successfully litigating coverage under a number of law enforcement liability policies issued to Forrest County. In 2019, Alex helped to secure and finalize two of the largest wrongful conviction settlements (which included significant insurance recovery) in U.S. history, including the largest total settlement, over $60 million, paid to four exonerees, and the largest pre-suit wrongful conviction settlement for a single plaintiff, $21 million. In all, Alex has helped secure settlements in amounts nearing $250 million for civil rights plaintiffs.

Alex has been featured in the American Lawyer, Bloomberg Law, the National Law Journal, Business Insurance, the National Insurance Journal, Missouri Lawyers Weekly, the Kansas City Business Journal, and the Legalist. Alex was named a Litigation Trailblazer by the National Law Journal (2019) and an Influential Appellate Advocate by Missouri Lawyers Weekly (2020). In 2020, Alex was awarded the prestigious David J. Dixon Appellate Advocacy Award, an award created by The Missouri Bar Foundation to recognize outstanding achievement in appellate practice by young lawyer members of The Missouri Bar. In addition, Alex has been recognized with an “Up & Coming Award” award from Missouri Lawyers Media and was named a Super Lawyer "Rising Star" (Missouri & Kansas) in 2021 and 2022.

Alex graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania and cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School. During his undergrad years, Alex trained to become an outdoor guide and spent three months hiking through the Alaskan wilderness, foraging much of his food.  Before law school, Alex spent a year volunteering as an Americorps VISTA in Kansas City helping to provide capital and education to small business entrepreneurs.
