As the use of computers, mobile devices, and online accounts has become integrated into our daily personal and business lives, so has the need to develop a succession plan for important digital property in the event of incapacity or death. Digital property includes electronically stored information, online accounts/services, Internet domain names, and other rights in the digital world, including intellectual property rights. Companies should be aware of the significant issues they may face as business owners or employees become incapacitated or die. In this presentation, we will discuss business continuity issues for digital property, ideas for an employee handbook to protect the company’s digital property, practical tips to plan ahead for digital property succession, and steps to take if you didn’t plan ahead. Although technology is changing every day, employers that plan ahead for digital property succession have a head start in this evolving frontier.
